We originally awarded these T-shirts as prizes in our Mystery Circuit Contest, but had decided not to offer them for sale. Rights to the virtuoso theremist's image in this familiar and very striking pose were not clear, and her attitude toward it was unknown. Giving them away was one thing, but selling them was not comfortable. We saved one T-Shirt for the archives.
Subsequently, after an enlightening exchange of email, theremin enthusiast and acquaintance of Mrs. Rockmore, Charlie Lester, offered to forward the last remaining shirt to her. He was hesitant to volunteer her address and out of respect for her privacy we did not ask.
We were apprehensive about this. Wouldn't you be? She might have been offended, or angry that the art had been used without her permission in the first place. Hey, and who was this Charlie Lester guy, anyway? But optimism won out over prudence, and we sent the shirt and a letter asking permission to reproduce it to Mrs. Rockmore via Charlie.
In the fullness of time we heard from Steven Martin (creator of the film Theremin: an Electronic Odyssey) that Mrs. Rockmore had not been well, but had received the package and would be delighted to grant rights in exhange for shirts to hand out to her family and friends. Some stories have very happy endings.
These shirts are true-to-size, so if you prefer a roomier fit, order one size larger.
