I don't own any of the PAiA Tube Head products but I am curious if any of those that do have experimented with changing out the tubes. I have an inexpensive tube mic from Carver and swapped out the Made In China tube with a RCA NOS and what a difference it made. Same with changing out the stock tubes that came with the ART Pro VLA II with used English Mullard tubes from the 50's and changed the characteristics that is sounds more like the compressor on my UA LA-610 pre amp.

Thanks, Toneman! That was a real interesting article. I'd still like to know what other tubes people have used successfully.

I have the HiFi tubehead, use it with my stereo - quick tried it a couple of times with guitar and synth but not enough to tell much. Mostly stereo obsessed with it.

Haven't done any heavy tube swapping but I did grab a couple pairs to try. A JJ hi performance 12AX7 pair and Tung Sol 12AX7 pair so far. All new easily available, no old stock.

The JJ's are nice, detailed- good bass treble and midrange - but run clean, lean towards neutral even at higher DRIVE settings.

The Tung Sols are my favorite - more prominent bass and treble and a sweet midrange, very detailed but full. Very tubelike when varying the DRIVE.

The stock Sovteks work well for me, maybe my stereo is more compatible with these. These give a good tubelike character for me, clean enough on my system somehow. I want to try other model Sovteks too.

Anyhow really love and usually use the Tung Sols so far, but will swap in the stock Sovteks when I want lots of tubelike character for a while.
